Carson City

Carson City, the State’s capital is located at the base of the eastern Sierra Nevada mountain range in west Nevada. It is situated near many significant landmarks, such as Lake Tahoe 20 minutes to the west, historic Virginia City 20 minutes to the northeast and Reno 30 minutes north. The State of California borders Carson City to the west and the Nevada counties of Douglas, Lyon, Storey and Washoe border the south, east and north, respectively. Carson City was created on November 25, 1861 and named for the famous western Explorer Christopher “Kit” Carson. Carson City is the smallest county in Nevada, covering approximately 153 square miles (396 square kilometers) and accounting for only 0.14 percent of Nevada’s total surface area of 110,540 square miles (286,297 square kilometers).
